distributed computing (Folding@home, 2008). It is unique, which is one of its greatest strengths. Another strength of this lab is that it is altruistic. While the technology is being used
with computer games and such, Vijay Pandes initial idea was to collect and collate all the bits and pieces of medical and scientific information that exists in the world for
the purpose of curing or eliminating many very horrible diseases. Pande (2008) explains the goal is: "to understand protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases." Pande (2008) goes on to tell
the reader that proteins are workhorses, they are the "nanomachines" in biology but before they can do what they are supposed to do, they have to gather together in a
specific configuration, that process is referred to as "folding." If they do not fold correctly, the person can get serious illnesses, such as Alzheimers, Parkinsons, Huntingtons, Mad Cow, different cancers
and many other diseases (Pande, 2008). Curing and preventing these diseases is a priority across the world but one of the problems is that bits and pieces of information regarding
this folding issue do not get shared. This scientist created a software program that can link computers together, basically creating a huge, huge supercomputer where information about this very
specific topic gets downloaded into all these computers (Pande, 2008). Thus, distributed computing. It gets better. The Pande lab is now collaborating with numerous labs across the world in their
work (Folding@home, 2008). There are also scads of volunteers working on this project as well as moderators and translators (Folding@home, 2008). They have had numerous commercial partners, like Google, Intel,
