The persons experience of illness including psychosocial aspects and their perception of their illness/condition: Mathewson (2006), a physician who had two hip replacement surgeries, relates his perceptions as a patient. His reactions are undoubtedly typical and may offer insight into the psychosocial and perceptual reactions of patients that can aid the student in recording the reactions of his/her patient. Mathewson writes that his vital signs were taken every four hours. He recalls that his "operated leg" was "so tender, so precious" requiring "such gentle support that only certain people" were "allowed anywhere near it" when Mathewson had to move (Mathewson, 2006, p. 54). At first he was suspicious of nursing assistants having the skill to successful assist him in moving or transferring as he assumed that they could not meet the "needs of a patient with a nearly two-ton leg"; however, when he finally did consent to being moved by someone who was less than one of the "real nurses," in his estimation, he found that the young nursing assistant accomplished the transfer in the "sweetest, gentlest and smoothest" manner possible (Mathewson, 2006, p. 54).
