These researchers identified the value of a growing body of studies at the time that identified a neurological basis to a syndrome of focal cranial dystonias that has become
known as blepharospasm-oromandibular dystonia. These researchers created a study of histories and diagnostic process of patients with Meiges (cranial dystonia) syndrome. Purpose of the Study The purpose of
this study as identified by the researchers was to review the documentation of patients diagnosed with Meiges syndrome, specifically viewing medical histories, the noted clinical findings, the identified complaints, and
the specific speech characteristics of individuals with this syndrome. The authors looked at 10 patients diagnosed with Meiges syndrome, looking at the breadth of documentation in correlation with existing
literature about competing views (psychological and neurological) on the diagnosis of this syndrome. The purpose of this study, then, is to provide support through anecdotal and medical evidence
for a neurological basis for focal cranial dystonia syndrome. Rationale The researchers maintained that through there were considerable studies up until that time regarding clinical and speech features
of dystonia, there was little documentation that supported the idea of focal cranial dystonia as a syndrome. The researchers argued that there was a growing amount of evidence in
the neurological literature that suggested a syndrome. But speech characteristics and behavioral therapies for this syndrome were lacking in the literature. As a result, the rationale for this study
is the lack of research in this area and the need to identify both neurological and speech factors related to the overall entity of cranial dystonia syndrome. Methods The
researchers began by assessing a group of 25 patients with Meiges syndrome from a neurology clinic, and found that 10 subjects were referred by neurologists to be a part of
