Essay / Research Paper Abstract
3 pages in length. Fluoride, thought to be the best way to prevent tooth decay, has now come under significant scrutiny for its connection to other health issues including damage to tooth enamel and cancer. Drinking water supplies across the country have had fluorine added their sources for nearly eighty years and toothpaste has been fortified for decades to make sure as many people as possible have access to easy prevention; today, almost seventy percent of the nation's population drinks fluoridated water. This, however, is precisely the problem: Fluoride has a fine line between acceptable and toxic levels that studies have found to be crossed, threatening the health of children and adults alike. have access to easy prevention; today, almost seventy percent of the nations population drinks fluoridated water. This, however, is precisely the problem at hand: Fluoride has a fine line
between acceptable and toxic levels that studies have found to be crossed, threatening the health of children and adults alike. Spotted teeth and the breakdown of enamel are two indications
of fluorosis, a condition caused by too much fluoride; skeletal fluorosis stiffens joints and fractures bones. The most controversial side effect of over exposure to fluoride, however, is the
presence of bone cancer. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) states fluoridated toothpaste is not the culprit but rather the likelihood of over consumption through the water supply. At
issue is the fact that children typically drink more water than their adult counterparts in relation to size, which has been found to dangerously increase the level of fluoride consumed.
Findings from an EWG analysis support the claim that the benefits of tooth decay prevention do not outweigh the risks of worse dental problems or cancer. So acute
is this problem that in 2005 the EWG pushed for fluoride to be included in the National Toxicology Programs Report on Carcinogens; however, even with scientific proof of the damaging
impact of continuing to fluoridate water - up to five times higher incidence of bone cancer in boys - the critical nature of the issue was sidelined by what many
believe to be the personal agenda of the Harvard School of Dental Medicines Dr. Chester Douglass who failed to include these results in a subsequent study. In fact, Douglass
