following the career of artist Herman Herzog, it is evident that he is quite skilled, and while born abroad, made himself comfortable in the United States of America. Herzog was a landscape painter, and his primary love was painting mountains (Trocolli, 2000). His trip to Yosemite for example is well documented (Scott, 2006). He lived a long life and died a centarian in 1932 ("Florida Marsh Scene," 2008). One landscape painting where his skill is seen is in the work entitled Florida Marsh Scene. The painting is an oil on canvas that was created between 1888 and 1910 and stands 16-1/3 inch by 13 inches ("Florida Marsh Scene," 2008). It sits in the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art since 1989, and is a donation made by Dr. and Mrs. David Cofrin ("Florida Marsh Scene," 2008). This painting by Herman Herzog depicts a realistic landscape of which the locale is reflected by the title. Obviously, this marsh scene that is apparently in Florida contains what one would expect. There are a number of trees, some bushes, water at the bottom of the painting and an array of clouds amidst blue skies on the top portion. Of course, the artist might have chosen to create this marsh scene very differently. Hence, it pays to note the attributes of the composition. The composition is such that the clouds help to distribute the ill-defined trees that are apparently haphazardly scattered. While not a seeming complimentary observation, the fact that the trees sit awkwardly reflects natures truths. Toward the left hand side, a tall tree reaches almost to the upward edge of the painting, but is met by a menacing cloud that contains dark and light attributes.
