Giltman 7/2010 Please On December 25, 2009, Northwest Airline Flight 253 was traveling internationally from Amsterdam, Netherlands to Detroit, Michigan when a passenger tried to ignite plastic explosives that were sewn to his underwear. There were approximately 300 people on board the jet airline and the attempted Nigerian bomber, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, was restrained before he could properly detonate the bomb. Instead, the passengers just saw flames and heard a popping noise when people realized something wasnt right. A Dutch passenger tackled the perpetrator and other passengers put out the flames to avoid further damage. Upon landing in Detroit, Abdulmutallab was arrested and taken to a nearby hospital to treat his burn wounds. No other passengers were injured. Two weeks later, Abdulmutallab was indicted for attempted murder and attempted use of mass destruction. Reports indicate that the United States received some sort of warning about the planned attack that Al-Queda quickly claimed responsibility for. However, the true heroes were those passengers on board who quickly responded to the situation (Slevin, 2009) and detained Abdulmutallab. They were led by the efforts of a Dutchman by the name of Jasper Schuringa. Even though Abdulmutallab boarded the plane in Amsterdam, the U.S. Government received extensive criticism that airport officials allowed someone to board a plane carrying explosives. President Barak Obama ordered an immediate investigation.
