1. Introduction The workplace is changing and employers need to change and adapt to meet both internal and external challenges. Financial pressures from the global recession and
credit crunch which started in 2008 have been felt by most businesses, impacting in a range of manner, including seeing changes and shifts in demand, necessitate production or supply changes,
as well as the needs to reduce costs or increase value adding practices. While many of these pressures are not new they have been reasserting themselves. One area of consideration
has been HRM, seeking to gain value from the employees at the same time as controlling costs. The use of flexible working practices, including but not limited to practices such
as increases in part-time positions, flexitime and job share, is one area that firms may gain value. 2. Barriers There are a number of areas in place that prevent or
deter firms from taking up flexible work practices. 2.1 Psychological Barriers The first is the issue perceived commitment, in the traditional workplace employers
like to know that their employees are working, preferring to have them physically present in the office and be able to see them, this may incorporated that is the employees
not physically present they do not have the same level of commitment and maybe slacking, and may be viewed on the periphery of the employment relationship (Ross, 2010; 18). There
is also an association with a lower level of commitment on the part of part-time staff, with an assumption a commitment is not likely to be as high as the
