is a stereotypical theme in many novels, but what also lies beneath the surface is a fledgling friendship. Over time, it turns out to be a friendship that endures, but the friendship is not with the woman of interest in this work. Rather, a deep friendship is forged with another male whom Frederic knows throughout his life. Like his romantic interest, the friendship ebbs and flows and at different times in their lives goes dormant, only to return with a fervor and an unusual complexity. According to a student writing on this subject, Frederic Moureau and Charles Deslauriers "mediate uneasily between affection and competition, aid and betrayal." In examining this unlikely friendship, does it make sense in the context of their psychological makeup and social life? Why are they friends exactly? A student asks: "What is the fate of friendship the novel imagines? What contingencies bring it to grief or shorten its span?" The setting is France at around the time of the Revolution of 1848. Again, Frederic the protagonist is in love with a woman he cannot have by the name of Madame Arnoux. Charles Deslauriers is an attorney and there is a friendship between Charles and Frederic. It is a friendship that endures, but had been weak and strong at different times in the lives, largely due to circumstance. Prior to the novels start, there is information contained in the beginning pages exploring characterization.
