rather than a daughter? (from chapter 3). Emma wanted a boy because only men were allowed the freedoms that she desired. "A man is free...to range the passions and
the world" (Flaubert 1140). Being able to live vicariously through a son would have given Emma a "compensation for all her past frustrations" (Flaubert 1140). However, she gives birth to
a daughter and on finding out the sex of her child, faints. 3. How does Emma "Perform" a certain role on Page 1151? Emma takes on all the
attributes of a good wife and mother. She praises her husband to Leon and speaks affectionately of Charles, pretending to be worried when he is late getting home. She actually
pays attention to her child, taking her away from the wet nurse and gushing over the baby for the benefit of company. Flaubert makes the observation that Emma appears to
pattern her ideas of motherhood from a particular novel. She attends to all the details of her household, making sure Charles vests have linings, his shirts have buttons, and obeying
all his suggests "without trying to understand his reasons" (Flaubert 1151). In short, she becomes the epitome of the ideal wife, which causes Leon to idealize her all the more.
