years, as it relates to plaster application, restoration and protection. While many small repairs can be done by the homeowner, homes that are extensively plastered will likely, at one time
or another, really need a professional for fixing. The following paper examines the history of plaster use and then moves on to examine restoration and conservation of plaster.
Flat and Decorative Plaster: History As one author notes, "Plaster in a historic building is like a family album. The handwriting of the
artisans, the taste of the original occupants, and the evolving styles of decoration are embodied in the fabric of the building" (MacDonald, 1989).
Plaster can be found, in relationship to historical and modern buildings, in great architectural buildings as well as the humblest of farmhouses (MacDonald, 1989). It is a material that
seems to have transcended cultural or ethnic boundaries as well (MacDonald, 1989). These facts apply to both flat and decorative plaster. One
of the most intriguing, and purposeful, elements of plaster is that it can be used on top of many different materials. For example, it can be used in frame construction,
can be put over brick, half-timber, and stone (MacDonald, 1989). It also offered up a surface that was relatively easy to clean and a compound that could be applied to
