pivotal moment in Joy/Hulgas life comes when a Bible salesman going by the name of Manly Pointer comes to their farm. He appears to be a "satanic character," but he
is actually an "angel of light," as he serves as the "unwilling instrument of grace," by stealing Joy/Hulgas leg and leaving her stranded (Jordan 48). It is in this instant
