Her stories, and this one included, provide the reader with very deep experiences that alter the characters forever, often using the title to suggest some powerful truth that cannot be seen from the title alone, but must be understood in context with the story. The following paper examines this story, "The Artificial Nigger," and discusses how the title relates to the theme in her story. The Artificial Nigger This story is given a title that does not necessarily make sense at the beginning as it is something that arrives near the end of the story. We may read the entire story just waiting to find out what the artificial nigger is because it is a very shocking and powerful title. And, the fact that African Americans play predominantly, though subtly, in this story further pulls us into the need to find some artificial nigger, or the explanation of the title. When we see the artificial nigger the boy has been betrayed by the grandfather and the grandfather, for the first time in his life, feels he is a sinner, a man who will be hated forever by his grandson. His ignorant arrogance has washed away and the innocent love possessed by the boy has washed away. When they encounter this artificial nigger they are transformed. The artificial nigger is a statue of an African American that is apparently in bad condition in a rich white neighborhood. The grandfather and the grandson look at this statue and begin to feel their shame and anger and betrayal wash away. In many ways this does not necessarily make sense for they do not really discuss it ...
