as it relates to self-interest. Thus, the author is easily able to recognize the inherent ability to rationalize virtually any socially immoral behavior as being something a person simply
wants to commit, with Mrs. Turpin representing the worst of humanitys judgmental attitude. Justification appears to be a large part of Mrs. Turpins
existence, in that she believes her judgmental actions will win her a comfortable place in Heaven. Indeed, one can justify any action to appear as though it is for
a good cause, which is what precisely what her social attitude appears to reflect. Indeed, while Mrs. Turpin has quite a talent for justifying even the most seemingly troublesome
of situations, she is left unprepared for the revelation she faces on page 420. "What you got to say to me? . . . waiting, as for a revelation."
Go back to hell where you came from, you old wart hog" (OConnor 420). It is at this precise point that Mrs. Turpins perception of both herself and
the world around her forever changes. The fictional works of Flannery OConnor instill feelings of confusion, judgment, disbelief, as well as a sense
