her in terms of grace. Discussion The story concerns Mrs. Ruby Turpin and her husband Claud, who come to a doctor to have Clauds ulcerated leg treated. Once there and
seated in the crowded waiting room, Mrs. Turpin engages other patients in conversation, during which time she passes value judgments on each of them, classifying some as poor white trash,
some as niggers (a word she uses simply because its customary, not as an insult) and choosing who to talk to on this basis (OConnor). Her obnoxious behavior annoys an
ugly student named Mary Grace, who is trying to read; finally, in a fit of anger, Mary Grace hurls her book at Mrs. Turpin, then lunges at her and tries
to strangle her (OConnor). She is hauled off and falls to the floor, where she has a fit; finally she insults Mrs. Turpin, calling her a warthog who should go
back to Hell (OConnor). Mary Grace is sedated and taken away, but for Mrs. Turpin, the insult is lasting and she cannot move beyond it. The interesting thing here
is that one might think it is Mary Grace who has the revelation, but its Ruby Turpin, who seems so set in her ways that any change would be impossible
for her. But when Mary Grace whispers her venomous insult, the message strikes home and Ruby thinks about a it for the rest of the day. In OConnors works, vision
and illumination are often "tied to some violent assault," as if the person has to be slapped until they understand whats going on (Paquet-Deyris 1). So it is here: from
