This is a 5 page paper discussing the writer Flannery O’Connor and the themes and characters in her work. The writer Flannery O’Connor was born in Savannah in 1925 to a Catholic family. She was highly observant of the religious zeal and injustices which existed in the southern states during her lifetime and incorporated these themes into her writing. In her work she used her characters to relate the unrealities which existed in the world and often portrayed those who were superior or religiously zealous as grotesque or harmful. In turn, she portrayed the innocents in her stories as more realistic characters and ones who required the patience and sympathy of the readers. O’Connor lived a relatively short life as she died of lupus at the age of 39 but in that time she wrote thirty-one stories and two novels in addition to her lecturing.

wrote thirty-one stories and two novels in addition to her lecturing. Flannery OConnor (1925-1964) was born in Savannah, Georgia and was the only
child of a Catholic family. She acquired a taste for writing at a very young age and wrote satirical columns for her high school newspaper. When she was 15 years
old, her father died of Lupus, a disease which would later claim her own life. Her religious background and her observation of the "bible-belt" in the Old South which surrounded
her were very much a prominent aspect within her writing. Her father was a realty owner and her mother came from a prominent family in the area. After high school
in Milledgeville, OConnor attended Georgia State College for Women and eventually graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in Literature (Books and Writers; Little Blue Light). Before she had even
finished her education however, she had already published her first short story "The Geranium". After graduation she went to write in New York but after being diagnosed with lupus, she
returned to live with her family in Milledgeville believing she only have three years in which to live; the same length of time her father died after he was diagnosed.
