that case. Not only did this case revolve around the controversial issue of the constitutionality of burning the flag, but it also created a precedent in regards to the
freedom of speech. With this case, it became evident that in order to truly protect our collective right to freedom of speech, that we must also protect the rights
of those whose views are vastly controversial and/or different than our own. In allowing a person to burn a flag in this country, we also ensure that the messages
we personally choose to send will also be protected. While we may find it personally abhorrent to burn a flag, by allowing another the gift of freedom to do
the very thing we abhor is to allow our fundamental freedom to be held in the highest regard. This paper examines
the basics of this case, and the implications of the case as well. This Supreme Court decision has continued to be a standard by which other cases are judged,
and continues to be a means of defining the freedoms to which we are entitled as Americans. It is necessary for all Americans to understand the definitions of freedom
