is urban and predominantly black. When urban children attend school, they are greeted with a language that contains correct grammar and sentence structures that may be foreign to them. Some
time ago, an attempt to bridge this language gap was made with the implementation of an Ebonics based curriculum. That trend did not last. Today, there is a debate as
to whether or not this style of living and language should be embraced in urban schools as a unique cultural contribution, or should be criticized and railed against. Gleibermann
(2007) writes: "Conversance with hip hop culture is particularly critical for the urban-based high school English or social studies instructor. Hip hop is the prevailing idiom of urban teenagers, the
basic currency of exchange across racial boundaries. Teachers need to have a position on Tupac if they want credibility" (p. 19). Taking culture into consideration used to mean country
culture, but today, the urban masses have developed their own, unique community with a language and code of ethics all their own. To embrace the community is controversial. After all,
much of the music and lyrics contain expletives and an overuse of the N word. It is also violent and misogynist. One of the most significant critics of the culture
is Bill Cosby. In examining the problem, he shook his head regarding the praise of Ebonics over correct English (Ridley, 2007). He gave a well known speech to that end:
