utilize a sense of humanity and loneliness to illustrate hopes and dreams and perhaps the futility of seeking hopes and dreams in a world of loneliness. The stories discussed are
Fitzgeralds Babylon Revisited and Winter Dream and Hemingways A Clean-Well Lighted Place and Hills Like White Elephants. Fitzgerald and Hemingway In first
comparing and contrasting the stories it is perhaps important to understand some of the foundational elements and messages in the stories themselves. In Fitzgeralds Babylon Revisited the story revolves around
a man named Charlie who is a recovering alcoholic. He has gone to Paris to try and reclaim custody of his young daughter from his sister-in-law. Custody was given to
her when Charlies wife died. In this simple plot one sees a need for connecting to something important, a daughter, a child, and a desire to reclaim ones life after
alcoholism. That essential plot is one filled with a powerful sense of seeking ones identity and a sense of loneliness. In Fitzgeralds
Winter Dream the story is about a young man who meets a young girl/woman and becomes romantically entranced with her. He is a simple young man in many ways, employed
as a caddy and she is a young girl/woman who seems to be of a more wealthy background than he. By the end of the story he has lost something
