The second generation, as a result, is often troubled as they attempt to fit into the new country that is not of their ancestors, as well as fit in with their families and the traditions of the families. Such is the case in John Okadas "No-No Boy" and Robert Rodriguez "Hunger of Memory." In the following paper we examine each novel, presenting one quote from each novel, that illustrates some of these struggles within the second generation character. Okada In John Okadas novel "No-No Boy" we are presented with a young man who is all but forced, by his family, to remain Japanese, adhering to Japanese ideals and traditions without allowing him to become a part of the America he lives within. WWII comes and the main character, Ichiro, has a choice between going into an internment camp for the Japanese or joining the military. However, due to the fact that he has been raised in such a tradition that will not allow him to give up all ties with his ancestors home he must choose to enter into the camp. This novel describes what happens when he is eventually free from this internment camp. With that in mind we present the following quote to be analyzed: ". . . I wish with all my heart that I were Japanese or that I were American. I am neither and . . . I blame the world which is made up of many [countries] which fight with each other and kill and hate and destroy again and again and again" (Okada NA).
