of the evolution of juvenile crime in urban America. Basing his contentions on personal observations made while growing up in the Bronx and those made after turning his attentions
as an adult to addressing juvenile crime in the inner city, Canada offers several suggestions halting the downward spiral we are now observing in these crime ridden areas. In chapter
23 of "Fist Stick Knife Gun", in particular, Canada contends the problems which currently characterize urban streets can be solved, in part, with the implementation of gun buyback programs, mandatory
registration of guns, and the provision of safe, educational, and fun activities to keep children off the streets. In actuality such programs are already in existence. While there
would likely be some benefits in stepping up each of these programs, doing so would not eliminate juvenile delinquency. What is needed is a revival of responsible parenthood and
accountability in the schools and other American institutions that deal with our young people. Juvenile delinquency is just one of the many reflections
we have of a deteriorating society. Juveniles are responsible for a greater and greater percentage of the crimes we are witnessing in the world and a greater and greater
percentage of violent crimes in particular. The behavior of far too many of our nations children has disintegrated from that which is societally acceptable to that which is societally
reprehensible. There is, of course, no one place to lodge the blame for juvenile delinquency. Numerous factors have been explored
at to their potential role in this problem. Family environment, socioeconomic position, and even gender have been implicated as potentially causative factors. So too, however, have a variety
