Second Thessalonians calls its authenticity into question by some scholars. Examination of this controversy sheds light on the theological contest of both of these epistles. First Thessalonians is believed to be the earliest of the surviving Pauline letters (Grayston 53). At the time of its writing, Paul had been a Christian missionary for roughly fifteen years (Grayston 53)(All citations are from this source). Scholars are unanimous in believing 1 Thessalonians to be authentic and not a "disguised pamphlet or early Christian forgery" (53). The absence of certain themes, which are evident in both Galatians and Romans, such as justification by faith, simply indicates that these themes were not yet being debated and, therefore, not central to church life in Thessalonica (53). The style and language of the letter is consistent with other Pauline letters (53). While the second letter is not substantially different in style from the first, it has features that call its authenticity into question. First of all, it presumably was sent by the same three authors, Paul, Silvanus and Timothy, and the only time that the three were together was in Corinth (according to the Book of Acts) (54). Presumably then, this letter, like the first, was written by while Paul was in that city, which was a period of eighteen months. The letters indicate that the situation n Thessalonica is much the same, but the hardships faced by T Thessalonian Christians in the second letter now include actual persecution (2 Thess. 1:4)(54). Also, the letter indicates that irresponsible elements in the church require firmer handling and that false announcement concerning the Day of the Lord require reiteration of events that must take place first (54).
