of positive interactions. I had no idea that in the scope of special education, there would be so many learned skills, so many legal and educational areas that I
would need to master. The many different theories behind cognitive development, education, learning styles and educational process provide a wealth of knowledge that educators must assimilate when developing positive
learning environments. Much to my surprise, educators rarely possess all the innate skills necessary to create these learning environments without significant educational support. I didnt have any teaching
experience before entering my masters program in early childhood education and special education. Initially, I was surprised by the breadth of the coursework and the complex nature of special
education law. During the course of my studies, I recognized that teachers must do a kind of balancing act, managing classroom behaviors, developing beneficial, curriculum-based programming, and integrating individual
goals and objectives. I also began to understand the application of theorists like Haim Ginott and Jean Piaget in regards to the role of the educator and the factors
influencing cognitive development. My understanding of educational theories and psychology were limited before I entered my educational program. Initially, I felt that some of the information that
I was learning was superfluous and I was unsure of how the theories could be applied in the classroom setting. After gathering a broad range of knowledge about the
role of teachers, though, I have gained greater insight into the approaches that are utilized and how theories help educators better understand their students.
