would not have approved of his firing, and questions whether the ends justify the means. Discussion Don Imus, Howard Stern and others of that ilk make their living by being
deliberately provocative, outrageous and shocking. Most people simply write the nonsense off, but at times it goes too far and crosses a line that makes it impossible to ignore. Imus
did that when he called the "Rutgers University womens basketball team nappy-headed hos" (Farhi). This is offensive on so many levels that its hard to believe anyone with an ounce
of sense would have said it. Not only is it a racial insult, its a sexually degrading statement as well. Imus went over the line and CBS canned him. Most
people probably think "good riddance." One who might not agree is Dr. Martin Luther King. Its very probable that Dr. King would be deeply offended by Imuss remark, but its
also probable that he would not have wanted the man to lose his job over it. Lets see why. Even though the remark is offense to both African-Americans and women,
there is a larger principle to be considered here, and that is the fact that freedom of speech is protected by the First Amendment. We may dislike what someone says
intensely, but he has the Constitutional right to say it. Michael Dorf argues that CBS made a mistake in firing Imus, even though he also says "I found Imuss racist
and sexist remarks about the Rutgers womens basketball team deeply offensive, both as a citizen and as a former member of the Rutgers faculty" (Dorf). He adds that if he
had ever listened to the show, hes sure he would have been offended "by his numerous racist, sexist, homophobic, and anti-Semitic statements over the years" (Dorf). But, he reminds us,
