However, it increasingly appears as though firefighters are more at risk for heart problems than anything else. The following paper researches the problems and conditions associated with heart attacks and heart disease among firefighters. Firefighters Death As eluded to in the introduction, "Most people think firefighters biggest death threats are fires and collapsing buildings. But over the last 30 years its been shown that 45 percent of firefighters on-duty deaths come from heart disease" (FoxNews, 2007). However, according to this author it is also noted that they are not necessarily more prone to heart attacks than people in other professions (FoxNews, 2007). According to this particular author, however, they are more prone to die from heart attacks while performing their job. They provide statistics in the following: * Firefighters are 12 to 136 times more likely to die of heart disease when putting out a fire. * Firefighters are 3 to 14 times more likely to die of heart disease while responding to an alarm. * Firefighters are 2 to 10.5 times more likely to die of heart disease while returning from an alarm. * Firefighters are 3 to 7 times more likely to die of heart disease during physical training (FoxNews, 2007). Apparently, according to the study cited, firefighters experience the same poor health conditions seen in many Americans such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and other factors involved with poor health that can lead to heart attacks (FoxNews, 2007). However, they also exert far more energy when performing their duties than do most people in their daily lives, much less professional lives (FoxNews, 2007).
