terrorist attacks are still fresh in many peoples minds. When the shock and grief began to subside, an open dialogue began circulating within many households and public schools all
framed around the question: What should we do in a fire emergency? Within the past five years, there have been numerous changes with regard to fire prevention, and much of
this has involved training and circulation of necessary safety information by federal, state, and local government organizations including the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Department of Homeland Security that was
created by President George W. Bush shortly after 9/11, and the National Fire Protection Association. According to statistics published by the federal government in September of 2006, an
estimated 1,602,000 fires were responded to by fire departments across the United States in 2005 (Karter). Of these fires, 3,675 civilians (anyone who is not a firefighter) killed, 17,925
civilians injured, and $10,672,000,000 in property losses (Karter). Every 143 minutes, a civilian was killed in a fire or injured every 29 minutes, and 82 percent of all civilian
fire deaths were the result of home fires (Karter). Furthermore, statistics indicate that asphyxiation accounts for more fire-related deaths than burns by a ratio of 3:1 ("Fires"). With
the past five years these statistics as these are easily accessible on the Internet and can be found on such public education websites as the National Fire Protection Agency (http://www.nfpa.org).
The NFPA has been leading the way in promoting various fire safety initiatives and strategies specifically designed to reduce the number of fire deaths (Karter). First and foremost,
