vocations, these are jobs where there may an inherent motivation which supports the performance of the job above and beyond the application of traditional motivation theory. In many instances those
who follow vocational callings will carry on in their profession even when traditional forms of motivations should not be sufficient to satisfy economic or social needs, jobs such as firemen,
nurses and ambulance staff may all be included in this category (Farmer et al, 1999). When looking at firemen and the profession
of a fire-fighter the indications of the level of commitment and indictor of the source of motivations can be seen in the UK with the fact, that despite many cuts
in wages and working conditions as well as many threats over the past few decades the UK fire brigade the strike that saw a short term walk out with the
threat of further action to be taken in 2002, which was the first industrial action of this nature since the 1977 strike (Thatcher, 2002). It has been argued that the
good will of the fire-fighters is used and abused in the way that some disputes have been settled. In order to consider this it is necessary to consider the way
in which motivation is achieved and manifests in public services professions. The concepts of motivation, from both the scientific school aligned with
