the streets of Manhattans Lower East Side. This paper discusses the book and how Finkelstein organizes her material and supports her arguments. Discussion Most, if not all, Americans have seen
the homeless: theyre the "down and outers," many of them mentally ill, many of them minorities, veterans or addicts who haunt the streets of our cities, miserable and desperate. For
many of them, the route to the street has been through drugs, poverty and broken homes. But there is a different kind of street person in some places today: middle
class white kids who should be at home but instead have chosen to live a nomadic and precarious existence on the streets of the Lower East Side. This is a
population segment that doesnt fit in with our picture of the average homeless person, and its also a population segment that has been left out of most of the studies
done on the phenomenon of homelessness in the worlds richest country. Finkelsteins book is an attempt to describe and understand the lifestyle of this population segment; she argues that its
impossible to understand this population by any ordinary means-she had to go out onto the streets and talk to these people herself in order to gather the material for the
book. She also will add to the increasing number of works "on the subjects of sub-cultural theory and homelessness" (Abstracts). Finally, her book will "advise policy makers on the unrecognized
public health implications raised by this population" (Abstracts). With no direction home is an ethnography of the homeless young people in Lower Manhattan; "ethnography" is defined as a
