For young students, the first benchmark standard is that student should be able to both identify and use vocabulary and concepts that are drawn from "visual art, dance, theatre and music" (WSSA, 2006). Similarly, older students should be able to "Explain and apply and the concepts of "visual art, dance, theatre and music using arts vocabulary" (WSSA, No date). In both instances, the standard indicates that students should be presented with material that gives them a fundamental understanding of some aspect of the fine arts. The following examination of childrens books looks specifically at books that are selected and reviewed because they can be utilized to support the standards of this aspect of Washington States standards expectations. Books for K-3 Artistic Pursuits, Grades K-3, Book One: An Introduction to the Visual Arts is a text that has been recently revised for 2007, is specifically designed for classroom use and includes 32 lesson plans and projects (Artistic Pursuits, 2006). This meets the WSSA standard by providing young students with lessons that provide them with the necessary vocabulary to understand what artists do. Ten lessons address the activities in which artists engage, which includes the preparation of "imagining and observing" (Artistic Pursuits, 2006). The book also explores drawing and painting techniques, as well as offering numerous examples of fine art. Fifteen lessons explore the world of art from prehistoric cave painting through book illuminations in the Middle Ages (Artistic Pursuits, 2006). This section of the book also introduces young students to the idea that art is used in different ways in different cultures.
