while" (McCourt 17). Thus begins Frank McCourts autobiographical memoir, Angelas Ashes. It hardly sounds like anything remotely resembling optimistic prose, but first impressions can often be deceiving.
This is not meant to imply that McCourts narrative is a fond look back at an idyllic childhood. In fact, it is more often than not quite the contrary
because McCourt, his parents, and siblings, were products of the poverty and famine that characterized The Great Depression. To make matters worse, the McCourt patriarch worked infrequently and when
he did, he often drank away his paycheck. Yet, Angelas Ashes is hardly a tale of gloom and doom either. It is a candid assessment of an Irish
family that endured more than its share of tragedy, but genuinely seemed to become better people because of their misfortune. Malachy McCourt Sr.
was born in the County Antrim town of Toome, and went to America with the typical immigrant dreams of prosperity. While in Brooklyn, he met and married Angela Sheehan,
another Irish transplant, and the couple wasted little time in starting a family. But most of the domestic and childrearing responsibilities fell to Angela because Malachy would rather hoist
a pint of Guinness than one of his young sons on his shoulders. Nevertheless, he was a strong presence in his childrens lives, regaling them with stories of Irish
