defend his arguments with scientific rigor. It allows him to share feelings spontaneously and so is usually written in first person. If the student adopts those guidelines he might write
something like this: On September 11, 2001, I was at the U.S. Department of Labor, having breakfast with a young graduate student I mentored. He had earned his bachelors degree
from Gallaudet, a college that provides solid schooling for deaf and hard of hearing students. We were on our way to the cafeteria for breakfast when we were told there
was a smoke cloud about five miles away, but we didnt really know what was going on. If we had had normal hearing, perhaps we would have learned of the
attack earlier than we did, but as it was, we simply didnt know what had happened for some time. We noticed that people seemed anxious and upset, but I was
working with a customer who had problems with his computer and got caught up in that. But even as I worked, I kept noticing that people were gathering together and
talking, and the sense of uneasiness and anxiety kept increasing. Finally I decided to use my hearing aid and approach a hearing person to find out what was going on.
He said something about plane crashes but he wasnt sure where they were or what had happened. I finally sent an intern to the lobby to find out what was
