meaningful. Discussion The book, which is non-fiction, is Mitch Alboms description of his relationship with his old sociology professor, Morrie Schwartz. Schwartz was Alboms favorite professor and their relationship
was very close, but like many people, they lost contact (Albom, 1997). Albom didnt see Schwartz for years, until one night he saw him on Nightline, talking with Ted Koppel
about death and dying (Albom, 1997). Albom was shocked to realize how ill Morrie was, and got in touch with him immediately. Morrie was dying, and had decided not to
be ashamed of the process, but to make it his last experiment in sociology (Albom, 1997). It was, in effect, Morries last class: "The class met on Tuesdays. It began
after breakfast. The subject was The Meaning of Life. It was taught from experience" (Albom, 1997, p. 1). Albom was the only student and he found that Morrie didnt give
any grades, but he did expect Albom to answer questions, and to come to their weekly sessions with questions for his professor (Albom, 1997). Their discussions touched on the truly
important subjects such as family, love, work, aging and death, and instead of a graduation, there was a funeral (Albom, 1997). On the fifth Tuesday, they talk about family. Mitch
Albom has no family, whereas Morrie is surrounded by his. He says that family is the foundation of everything: "The fact is, there is no foundation, no secure ground, upon
which people may stand today, if it isnt the family" (Albom, 1997, p. 91). Morrie says that his illness has brought the need for the love of a family into
