is an aspiring writer. The story puts these two together and ultimately presents many different perspectives for the viewer to witness. In these perspectives one can see many differences as well as similarities between the two, although they are ultimately very different. The following paper examines the relationship between Forrester and Jamal, with a strong focus on the psychological elements. Finding Forrester In this particular film the viewer is presented with two very different individuals from two very different worlds. One critic notes, "Its the story of a secretive genius, Jamal Wallace (well-played by newcomer Rob Brown), an African-American 16-year-old who conceals a love for books and an impressive self-acquired education in order to fit in with the rest of the basketball-mad kids in his Bronx neighborhood" (Miller). In the character of Forrester one is presented with a man who is a recluse, afraid of the world, but clearly far more educated and from a higher class in society. It is intriguing to note how the two will often make assumptions about one another, based on what they believe the other to be concerning upbringing and intelligence. For example, one evening they are watching Jeopardy and Forrester begins making comments about how Jamal would not know a particular author whom Forrester begins quoting. Jamal proves him wrong, illustrating he does know the author and his work. Likewise Jamal comes over one night and sees Forrester reading the National Inquirer. He asks why he is reading such trash and states "You should read the Times" wherein one sees that he assumes, just because Forrester is from a more educated social class he should not, and would not want to, read the National Inquirer. ...
