To illustrate precisely what he means by this, Sergiovanni offers the experience of a new teacher, Stephanie Neuberger. The example of how Neuberger becomes assimilated to the school culture of Adlai Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois demonstrates the point of this article. First of all, the author describes how the hiring process at this school includes the input of faculty, not simply the decision of the principal, which makes it is clear that the schools focus is on collaboration, rather than a strict hierarchy and that leadership is shared.
