It would be reasonable to assert that the topic of security has always been one which is of great concern to financial institutions, even prior to the advent of the
Internet. For example, banks, insurance houses and similar organisations rely heavily on gaining and maintaining the confidence of their customers, and this is something which has always been dependent on
assuring customers that not only their investments but also their transactions are kept completely confidential.
In the past, this has meant ensuring that the pragmatic elements of finance are closely supervised: making strict
regulations regarding the way in which safety-deposit boxes are accessed, for example, or taking steps to ensure that bank staff themselves are honest and trustworthy. However, the more that financial
systems have become automated, the more opportunity there is for security to be breached. This is not always something which implies that those who work in financial institutions are themselves
lacking in integrity or that they have any criminal motivation: the way in which computer databases are set up, for instance, means that there is sometimes opportunity for error which
can lead to breaches in security through accidental human error, and there are also bugs in new systems which are not immediately apparent.
