British Airways perennially is one of the worlds leading and most profitable airlines. It routinely outperforms the US airline industry against which British Airways listing on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) facilitates comparison. As a high percentage of American airlines are operating under bankruptcy protection or recently have emerged from that protection (i.e., United Airlines), British Airways not only remains profitable but improves its performance year on year. Financial analysis of the companys most recent annual report reveals that the airline financially is quite sound and seeks to increase both passenger traffic and revenues. It carries a current market capitalization of more than $9 billion, more than twice that of the leading US-based airline on the NYSE and leading all major airlines listed on the NYSE. All of the worlds major airlines suffered in the post-9/11 decline in air travel. British Airways still is in the process of recovering from that difficult time but persistently is reducing the debt incurred in that and subsequent years before air travel recovered. The number of air passengers declined in 2006, but revenues increased as did revenue passenger kilometer (RPK) (2005/2006 Annual Report and Accounts, 2006).
