The American Red Cross (ARC) is a volunteer-based humanitarian organization founded in 1881 by Clara Barton. Guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red
Cross Movement, ARC provides "relief to victims of disasters and help[s] people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies" (Frequently Asked Questions, n.d.). With nearly 1,000 local organizations across
the country and nearly a million volunteers, ARC is one of the worlds largest humanitarian organizations. ARCs Focus Most attribute creation of the
Red Cross to Clara Barton, but such was not the case (Frequently Asked Questions, n.d.). Originally modeled after the International Red Cross Movement, and ARC added disaster assistance to
its list of services quite early in its existence. Its first such response was to the victims of a Michigan forest fire (Murphy, 2001). Though officially neutral and
not a part of the government, ARC has been an integral part of military efforts in times of war, and it administers the 9/11 disaster relief fund for victims families.
Currently, it presently is facing the largest challenge of its history in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. ARC maintains 35,000 paid positions,
but it still manages to use more than 90 percent of donated funds directly for the purposes for which they were donated (American Red Cross, n.d.). In addition to
disaster services, ARC collects blood from more than four million donors annually, "making it the largest supplier of blood and blood products in the United States" (American Red Cross, n.d.).
