in Film as Social Practice is that one cannot distance the concept of film as art, from that of film as social practice, since the end product (the work of art) is the result of the interaction of numerous examples of social forces. If one looks, for example, at the social practice theory, it dictates in effect that the various forces which have contributed to the film - economics, the artistic vision of the director, socio-historical events, political influence, and so on - are what shapes the final artistic product. Whilst Turner does not deny that this is true, he also asserts that the process is reciprocal: in other words, the film creates these influences just as it is influenced by them. He looks, for example, at the point at which sound was introduced into the formerly silent cinema, and suggests that whilst there were certainly artistic and economic rationales for the change from silent to sound, these were exemplifying a much more basic need on the part of the audience, for a greater degree of realism in art which the addition of sound could supply. The overt reasons for making the change - dwindling audience numbers, and the need to cope with more complex narrative structures, for instance - were the outward manifestation of this deeper social need. The change itself then had ramifications within social culture and economics which affected much wider areas of social culture.
