Cantonese films as a child. The man who started out life as Li Jun Fan was not content to allow others to determine his fate. With unrelenting determination,
Bruce Lee charted his own course, and as a result achieved overnight success. While he would have preferred becoming an American film celebrity, opportunities for Asians were practically nonexistent.
Achieving some brief notoriety as Kato in the ABC television series, The Green Hornet, when the series was cancelled after one season, Lee wisely concentrated on instrument that would orchestrate
his cinematic success - his unique approach to martial arts known as Jeet Kune Do, or "the way of the intercepting fist" (Stein, 1999, p. 118). But despite having
such famous students as actor James Coburn and Steve McQueen, success eluded Bruce Lee in the United States. The question of why can be answered with a single word:
Prejudice. In the early 1970s, Asians in American films were relegated to largely subservient roles. They were portrayed as blatant stereotypes that were, more often than not, used
as comic relief. This exclusion of Asians in cinematic starring roles caused Lee many professional complications, and after a few bit parts in Hollywood features he decided to pack up
his wife Linda and two young children and move to Hong Kong, where his ambitions would not be thwarted by ethnic prejudice. His wife Linda recalled that Lee was
ambivalent about returning to China because he believed that in order to achieve his goal of overnight success, he needed to be in California. But after giving the matter
