in Tibet, Harrer recounts how his time in Tibet was an emotional awakening for him that transformed him literally into another person with a totally different set of values. The
film adaptation of his book does a credible job of depicting this transformation and is actually more historically accurate then the book. Harrer has recently only recently come forward
with the revelation that in his youth he joined the Nazi party as a sports trainer. I was enlisted in the Styrian SS as a sports teacher, said Harrer. (Reuters
news service, 5/28/97) Harrer was photographed with Hitler at a ceremony in 1938 when Hitler congratulated the members of his successful Eiger expedition. Harrer has denied active participation in any
of the Nazi atrocities. He stated, I have a clear conscious. The film was altered in post production so that Harrers Nazi participation would be included in the context of
the film. He is referred to in the movie as a distinguished member of the National Socialist Party. Also, a voice-over was added that expresses Harrers regret in ever
being a part of something that committed atrocities similar to the ones he photographed performed by the Chinese. In this way, the film is actually more historically accurate then the
book since Harrer did not include his Nazi past in his autobiography. Harrer is totally self-centered at the beginning of the movie. Preoccupied with the pursuit of fame and
glory and handsome as an Aryan god, the movie opens with Harrer about to coldly leave his pregnant wife to join a German-sponsored mountain-climbing expedition led by Peter Aufschnaiter. Arrogant
and aloof, the audience soon learns that this is characteristic of Harrer. He is someone who never apologizes and never feels remorse. Aufschnaiter tells him, No wonder youre always alone,
