most difficult type of film to make, for as New York Times reviewer Stephen Holden remarked, Big Fat Liar "occupies that queasy demographic no mans land between sanitized family fare and naughty teen comedy" (24). The screenwriter, Dan Schneider, is certainly no stranger to teen fare, having penned several shows for the popular adolescent cable network, Nickelodeon, and was one of the stars of the 1980s ABC high school comedy, Head of the Class (Holden 24). Big Fat Liar, which stars TVs Malcolm in the Middle teen heartthrob Frankie Muniz as Jason and former Nickelodeon featured performer Amanda Bynes (who now co-stars with Jennie Garth in the WB comedy series, What I Like About You) as his best friend, Kaylee, is a "moral fable," a contemporary adaptation of the fairy tale, "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" (Holden 24; Ross 10). It is a farcical comedy that seems to be an adolescent combination of Home Alone and Ferris Buellers Day Off, but occasionally seems to be more miss than hit in terms of its story, which according to Salon Magazines senior writer Damien Cave, "feels... like an hour-long [Nickelodeon TV show] episode stretched into a movie" (Cave). However, as evidence of the mixed critical reaction to this film, The Tampa Tribune critic Bob Ross disagrees, calling Big Fat Liar "a showbiz fantasy fueled equally by satiric barbs and ebullient slapstick" (10). The plot centers around Jason Shepherd, a 14-year-old Michigan eighth grader who can turn a phrase as quickly as he can turn on the impish charm. His friend Kaylee is someone with whom he can effortlessly match wits and the two have a refreshing multidimensional male/female relationship that does not predictably dissolve in a nauseating case of raging hormones.
