ugly tale of dysfunctional families, consisting of the Burnhams and their next-door neighbors, the Fitts. In the films opening voice-over, Lester Burnham, portrayed by Kevin Spacey, announces to the
audience, "Im 42 years old... In less than a year, Ill be dead. Of course, I dont know that. In a way, Im dead already" (Steyn 36).
He has what amounts to a dead-end job at an advertising trade publication, and Carolyn is his apathetic overachiever of a wife, a real-estate agent who revels in material excess.
Their marriage has existed only for the sake of appearances for years. Lester wryly observed, "Our marriage is just for show - a commercial for how normal we
are, when were anything but" (Berardinelli American Beauty). Jane Burnham was an insecure teenager who was estranged from her parents by a generational gap of emotional distance rivaling Mount
Everest. The Burnhams neighbors are Marine Colonel Frank Fitts, his wife Barbara and son Ricky. Colonel Fitts is a classic homophobe, a paranoid ultraconservative military stereotype who saw
"fags" under every bed. He forced his son Ricky to submit to drug and urine testing twice a year, and his son, like Jane, was a reflection of his
troubled home life. To escape, Ricky retreated into his own world of drugs and voyeurism. Simply stated, American Beauty was an unflinching glimpse into dysfunctional familial relationships, the
unfortunate consequence of pursuing the American Dream at all costs. The film-makers considered sociological issues of race, class, age, sexuality and gender, and made frequent use of cinemas most
