Inc. by K. Von Huben 11/2010 Please Introduction The Mission is a 1986 film about attempts to bring Christianity to the
Indians in South America. This paper summarizes and analyzes the film. Discussion Summary: The story is set in 1750 in South America, where the Catholic Church has been trying to
convert the Guarani, who are a real tribe (Berardinelli, 2009). The main characters are Father Gabriel (Jeremy Irons), Rodrigo Mendoza (Robert De Niro) and Cardinal Altamirano (Ray McAnally). As the
story opens, Spain is ceding its South American territories to Portugal; Spain forbids slave trading but Portugal allows it (Berardinelli, 2009). The problem is that the Jesuits have built sanctuaries
for "converting and sheltering the local Guarani Indians," and the Church is trying to decide if it should continue to protect the locals or release the sanctuaries to Portugal, these
putting the Indians into the hands of slavers (Berardinelli, 2009). If the Church agrees to withdraw the Jesuits and leave the Indians to the Portuguese, they will be sold into
slavery; if it does not, the Spanish priests will become enemies of Portugal and by extension, Spain will also become an enemy of Portugal as well, an eventuality which will
weaken its position both in Europe and the New World. This is unacceptable, so the protestations about protecting the Indians are only for show; the Cardinal knows its a "done
deal" and the Church is going to abandon the Guarani (Berardinelli, 2009). The climax of the film has both Gabriel and Rodrigo trying to defend the Guarani; they both die
