with death and aging. As the film unfolds, the evolution of each character becomes clear. As one midlife crisis is resolved by an act of infidelity the dynamics of the
relationships change. This is true for all of the couples and their relationships with one another as well as the communication as exists within the context of the entire group.
With six people in a relationship, the dynamics are extraordinarily complex. This paper will provide an analysis of the evolution of the group, from the beginning when the three couples
spend a spring vacation in New England, until the end of the film, when things have changed quite drastically. When the Callans split up, it sent waves of fear
through all of the women, particularly Kate and Claudia who still had their husbands. This split happens early in the film where everyone learns of Nick Callans girlfriend. Since it
was apparent that these three couples were a close knit group the theme of the film centered on midlife crisis and the cliche of the aging man dumping his wife
and choosing a younger woman. When this happens to one of the couples, the others go through a metamorphosis. Each of the still married couples fight with one another.
Even Jack and Kate, played by Alan Alda and Carol Burnett, experience tension. This is probably the most stable and mature couple of the group.She questions his motives as to
why they never go away alone. Jack, an attorney, does not take Kates complaint very seriously but does come to the realization that passion comes in waves. One cannot experience
lust every moment in a long term relationship. This is important. Perhaps underneath Kates question is actually a query as to her husbands feelings since she is probably feeling threatened
