the nature of his work and life. A close examination of this film indicates that Jack suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), which was previously known as multiple personality disorder
until it was renamed by the American Psychiatric Association in the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-IV) (Muller). According to the DSM-IV, DID is associated with
"a trauma-induced, psycho-dynamically based dissociation and fragmentation of feeling, thinking and behavior sufficient to allow coalescence around two or more distinct identities" (Muller). The filmmakers make it clear that Jack
is dissociated from any of the normal connections that help people to cope with the stress of modern life. The symptoms of DID include the individual demonstrating multiple sets of
mannerism, attitudes or beliefs that are quite distinct and different from each other, as well as depersonalization, a distorted sense of time, and bouts of amnesia. These symptoms are all
visible in the Jacks life. During the first part of the film, Jack is shown traveling around the country in his job as a recall coordinator (Muller). His job provides
him with no sense of purpose in life and he has no social connections to define his life away from work. The point of this life seems to be to
purchase expensive consumer goods. The stress and psychic pain of this situation causes chronic insomnia. A disinterested and unsympathetic doctor advises Jack to stop whining and that he should visit
a support group for survivors of testicular caner to meet people who have real problems. While the doctor was being sarcastic, Jack follows this advice and finds that the emotional
