people who may be going through difficult times, or facing serious emotional, mental or other problems. This essay focuses on my expectations for a field trip to a drug
and alcohol outpatient program. Expectations Im expecting the setting to be somewhat impersonal, since the people receiving treatment are coming to a clinic located in a hospital. It
may be a cold atmosphere but I hope not, because people seem to do better in a place where there has been some effort made to decorate it and make
it more comfortable. As to the patients, I admit to being a little nervous because of my expectations concerning the people who are being treated for substance abuse on an
out-patient basis. Ive learned that people who have substance abuse problems usually have other difficulties, either caused by the addiction or, in some cases, causing the problem (Excerpt from
the BSW Field Work Readiness Handbook, 2004). They may have medical, emotional or social problems, or martial trouble, all of which have to be resolved, in addition to dealing with
the addiction itself (Excerpt from the BSW, 2004). Often, in programs like this, the patients are using more than one drug, or they have a psychiatric problem in addition
to their addiction (Excerpt from the BSW, 2004). Addicted patients are often "highly resistant to therapy" and "skilled in making up excuses" with which they try to "con" the
