do to forestall the inevitable. As a worker of the Politov factory during the imminent uprising of 1917 Petrograd, Gordeis description of on-the-job occurrences was nothing if not deplorable,
even by Russian standards, with wholly inferior operational training and/or safety equipment accounting for myriad injuries; coupled with vaguely nutritious lunches of bread, broth and occasional meat after having no
breakfast, being forced to rise before dawn and work in bitter cold, Gordei endured tremendous abuse and human atrocity just to maintain a semblance of social and economic stability (Smith,
1985). CHAPTER ONE Russias failure to establish a solid infrastructure with regard to industrialization left Petrograd in harms way when it came to keeping up with the other flourishing
European countries. In order to rectify this inadequacy in as short a period of time as possible, Gordei and his fellow factory workers were forced to withstand inhumane working
conditions where low pay and double-digit workdays were the norm. Gordei, just as frustrated as his buddies Ivan and Leonid, participated in myriad strikes and riots as a means
by which to illustrate the injustice of such conditions. These violent demonstrations served some purpose when a handful of factories relented to the pressure and approved wage hikes, however,
they quickly evaporated as inflation crept into the warring city. Gordei and his comrades soon realized there was just one way to put an end to such injustice: paralyze
every aspect of commerce by striking once and for all. This decision served to be a double-edged sword for Gordei and the rest of Petrograds factory workers, inasmuch as
they fell victims to their own solution when commodities became unattainable due to sky high prices. Food was particularly difficult to come by, and soon Gordeis friends and family
