non-fiction tells a story but when it does there are subtle, as well as obvious, elements that can be very different from fictional stories. The following paper discusses the differences in narrative styles seen in a fiction (Philip Ross The Boy and the Bank Officer) and non-fiction story (Paulina Borsooks Virtual Romance). Fiction and Non-Fiction Narrative In the fictional story the narrator, telling her story in first person, presents a similar foundation to the non-fiction story for it is also a first person narrative, as is often the case in any story that is non-fiction. They are both stories that deal with the world around them in a particular manner, one in relationship to technology and one in relationship to banking regulations, or supposed regulations. They are also stories that essentially have some sort of plot that involves the characters, or the narrators experiences. But, aside from that there are different narrative styles. In Ross story, a very short piece, the individual is sharing with the reader an experience they had at a bank, trying to help a young boy and then realizing his help would not have been beneficial. His story is without the great deal of emphasis and literary elements that speak of complexity and literature, for he is only telling his story. For example, he states such things as "I began thinking about my friend the other day as I walked into a small, overlighted branch office on the West Side. I had come to open a checking account" which is actually quite descriptive for a non-fiction illustration, conjuring up images of the environment in a literary fashion almost (Ross). But, in the story by Borsook one sees far more explanation that is clearly of the literary, fictional style, as the narrator states, "Dirk ...
