telling stories, working by choice in the mucky fields of the Everglades," as well as by "choosing a man younger than she for a lover and remaining childless" (Mergen, 2001,
p. 85). The following creative writing is no as dynamic or as "real" as that of Hurston, but it is inspired by her authenticity and by the way she crafted
a story in which a black woman handled whatever life could throw at her and was not a victim. Anna straightened her posture and her hair before ringing the
bell. She endeavored to put on her "professional" face, but smiled at the effort as the response from the client was always the same. The door opened and a somewhat
