doing so will improve our health. This paper describes what the function of fiber is, where its found and other facts about it. Discussion What is fiber? Fiber is the
term given to those materials that "make up the parts of plants" that are indigestible by humans (Whole grains and fiber, 2010). Fiber is classified as either "soluble or insoluble,"
and the two types do different things (Whole grains and fiber, 2010). Soluble fiber is defined as fiber that dissolves in liquid; insoluble fiber does not (Tatum, 2010). Soluble fiber,
when eaten regularly "as part of a diet low in saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol," help raise the quality of the diet overall and decreases the "risk of cardiovascular
disease" (Whole grains and fiber, 2010). Soluble fiber reduces LDL, the "bad" cholesterol, by a "modest" amount; the reduction is greater than what can be achieved by diet alone (Whole
grains and fiber, 2010). Among the foods that contain soluble fiber are "oat bran, oatmeal, beans, peas, rice bran, barley, citrus fruits, strawberries and apple pulp" (Whole grains and fiber,
2010). Insoluble fiber "has been associated with decreased cardiovascular risk and slower progression of cardiovascular disease in high-risk individuals" (Whole grains and fiber, 2010). Fiber can help create a full
