seem to be one point on which there may be some agreement: rape. Even the most adamant pro-life supporters will at least consider that women who are raped
and get pregnant may loathe the idea of bearing a child that is the result of a criminal attack; may be psychologically unable to come to terms with the rape;
and may therefore at least consider an abortion. However, many "pro-lifers" will not accept abortion under any circumstances, claiming that all life is sacred, no matter how that life
began. The question under discussion really becomes one of fetal rights: does a fetus have a right to live no matter how it was created? Discussion
The way in which a woman handles a pregnancy that results from rape depends "on the society within which she lives and the perspective from which she understands her condition"
(Medical ethics). If the woman believes she is an autonomous "rights bearing individual" and also that the developing fetus has no rights, then she may choose an abortion, provided
her society approves the procedure (Medical ethics). The phrase "has no rights" in relation to the fetus sounds harsh; but its true. A woman who believes that she
is a fully functioning adult human being must of necessity make the decision here, and if she decides that she cannot stand the thought of having a living reminder of
her violation, she is justified in abrogating the fetuss right to live. However, if she believes that the fetus has the same rights as every other human being, and if
she can overlook the origin of that life, she may choose to bear the child; all societies will support birth where not all will support abortion (Medical ethics).
